UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil on 18 November, marking the first meeting between the heads of state of the two countries in six years<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The meeting, held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, lasted approximately 20 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n

During this brief but significant engagement,\u00a0Prime Minister Starmer emphasised\u00a0the importance of a “strong UK-China relationship”\u00a0for the benefit of both nations and the broader international community, calling for\u00a0relations to be\u00a0“consistent, durable, and respectful.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The UK will be a\u00a0predictable, consistent, sovereign actor committed to the rule of law,”\u00a0said PM Starmer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A UK government press release<\/a> stated that Prime Minister Starmer underscored the need for China and the UK to collaborate in supporting global stability, fostering economic cooperation, and advancing the global clean energy transition. He underscored that much more must be done to achieve net zero, with both nations playing a vital role in this effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
