The 23-days of the festival will see 290,000 brands battling it out with more than 14 million deals just on Alibaba platforms, all hoping to earn their share of the sales spike that happens every November, writes Mark Tanner from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinaskinny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The China Skinny<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Like last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/chinas-most-popular-live-streaming-e-commerce-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">live streaming<\/a> looks set to contribute a large portion of sales. Live stream queen Viya\u2019s 14-hour marathon show pre-sold about \u00a3910 million worth of goods. However, it was live streamer and \u201clipstick brother\u201d Austin Li who took the crown, pre-selling \u00a31.3 billion worth of goods during his 12-hour show, not including orders that were later cancelled. It is a sentiment that has\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">accelerated since the pandemic<\/span>\u00a0and is being nudged along by\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">increasing pressure on China\u2019s rich and famous<\/span> to promote \u201ccultural confidence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The sentiment is representative of the rising \u2018China chic\u2019 or <em>guochao<\/em> trend, which is shifting preferences towards <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/do-chinese-consumers-still-want-to-buy-british\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">domestic brands<\/a>. As a consequence, foreign brands can\u2019t just be on a shelf or screen and expect consumers to think they are better as they did a decade ago. The most obvious example is of the superior craftmanship abroad in the <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/5-ways-luxury-brands-can-impress-chinese-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">luxury category<\/a>, where foreign brands still account for all but a slither of sales in China, despite a lot of talk of Chinese luxury brands. But the perception spans a plethora of categories, from <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/report-automotive-industry-opportunities-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cars<\/a> to coffee. China\u2019s most awarded FMCG company, Yili, has invested billions of <em>yuan<\/em> in dairy in countries like New Zealand to capitalise on the\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">safe, healthy and pure perceptions of foreign dairy<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even in categories such as beauty, where \u2018C-beauty\u2019 (Chinese beauty brands) is attracting a lot of attention, China\u2019s most famous local brand, the <span class=\"s3\">proudly Chinese Perfect Diary,<\/span> uses foreign OEMs to reinforce that its cosmetics brands are high quality. Many of the perceived advantages domestic brands play to aren\u2019t insurmountable for foreign brands. Indeed, foreign brands continue to hold trump cards that many of the most famous Chinese brands still cannot match, and there are many consumer subcategories where foreign names still dominate, including supplements and baby products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Take the beauty category for example: based on data from\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">China Skinny\u2019s Trackers<\/span>, \u201csuits Chinese skin\u201d is both the most-desired trait from consumer panels and one of the most effective claims on e-commerce stores. Foreign beauty brands can accommodate this need by ensuring they have ingredients that consumers feel are relevant to their skin, including <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/tcm-promotion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traditional Chinese medicine<\/a>.
