In what in hindsight appears to be a huge missed opportunity, Ben Sherman \u2013which got its start selling mod-style short-sleeved shirts in the 1960s \u2013 does not currently have an official store on Tmall or JD.com.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Guardian noted that one Weibo user likened the Team GB outfits to the Hogwarts uniform. Harry Potter, as one of the UK\u2019s most significant modern cultural exports, has also become somewhat representative of British style in China, especially since Universal Beijing Resort and its Harry Potter-themed land opened in September 2021.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chinese millennials \u2014 who grew up reading the books in both Chinese and English \u2014 have flocked to the park to explore the Hogsmeade Village recreation and, more importantly, take pictures wearing Hogwarts-inspired costumes to post on WeChat and <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/what-is-xiaohongshu-and-how-can-it-help-your-brand-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xiaohongshu<\/a>. The surge in popularity for Harry Potter and associated looks has not been lost on international chain retailers, either, with H&amp;M selling public school uniform-style jumpers as part of its autumn\/winter collection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Setting trends is nothing new for the UK. British\u00a0universities and design houses provide a crucible for design talent from around the world<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">A quintessential sense of \u2018Britishness\u2019 has long been a fundamental part of the appeal of the British fashion brands that have succeeded in China, including Paul Smith and Burberry. These brands are considered to be synonymous with heritage and craftsmanship, particularly if they have an association with the Royal family like Burberry. Burberry, in particular, is popularly worn as part of the <span class=\"s1\">\u82f1\u4f26\u98ce<\/span> <em>yinglunfeng<\/em> (aka \u2018British style\u2019) aesthetic,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> which features a lot of plaid, tweed and muted colours (similar to the \u2018dark academia\u2019 and \u2018light academia\u2019 trends that have become popular on <a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/what-is-tiktok-who-owns-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a> in recent years). High street and mid-range British fashion brands, on the other hand, have often failed to make a splash in China, facing intense competition from massive international chains like H&amp;M and Zara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cSetting trends is nothing new for the UK. We host one of the world\u2019s four biggest fashion weeks, are home to a legion of high-end and fashion-forward clothing brands, and our universities and design houses provide a crucible for design talent from around the world,\u201d adds Shaikh.
